Inclusion Unscripted
Inclusion Unscripted, where we’re not just talking about diversity and inclusion, we’re living it. The Inclusion Unscripted Live Weekly Podcast is unapologetically honest about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Host Margaret Spence believes that to push beyond diversity by the numbers, we need to start having conversations that no one else is willing to have. This show is a platform for those conversations. Each week, we dismantle the status quo and help organizations understand how to stand up for professionals of color and women in the workplace. We tackle two bold questions: When you are at your best and most inclusive self, who do you want to become? And what should your employees expect from you when you are inclusive? Our goal is to empower diverse listeners to ask for what they want and to inspire organizations to co-create more equitable and inclusive workplaces. Tune in every week for a new episode. One of my biggest struggles is finding time to support everyone who needs it while staying focused on the work I am trying to do every day. I know for most DEI Leaders, that is your struggle as well. So how do you stay focused and support everyone – when you also need support to keep going? How do you prioritize and get stuff done if you’re helping everyone?
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted with Margaret Spence, we will unpack DEI Leader Wellness - what do we need to be whole? Is the work enough? Or do we need more support?

E35: Advocating For Health Equity: What Should We Know?
Thursday Jun 08, 2023
Thursday Jun 08, 2023
When we discuss diversity and inclusion, we often don’t touch on health equity. How do diverse people navigate spaces to access and receive equitable health care? Diversity decisions in health care can affect your employee’s well-being in the workplace. Everyone shows up as whole people – how can you help your employees navigate their health care in the workplace?
In today’s episode, Margaret Spence is joined by special guest Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell. We will discuss why we must take charge of our own health care. What does healthcare advocacy look like for women and men? What are the common misconceptions that we have to overcome...How do we build trust in health care as diverse people?
Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell is the Medical Director of Community Engagement and Health Equity, Co-Lead of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and Medical Director of Urgent Care Clinics, Carbon Health, and Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, Reno, NV.
Deeply involved with her community, Dr. Curry-Winchell is also the founder of Beyond Clinical Walls, the medical director of the Washoe County Sexual Assault Response Team, and volunteers as an assistant medical examiner at Washoe County Child Protective Services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Curry-Winchell joined the Reno Mayor's Task Force and Governors Medical Advisory Team.
She has received many awards, including the 2022 Healthcare Heroes Award from Nevada Business Magazine, the Community Service Award from Washoe County Medical Society, the 2021 Young Physician Award from Washoe County Medical Society, the 2020 PBS Reno Spotlight Extraordinary Neighbor award, Sierra Nevada's Top 20 Most Powerful Women award in 2019 and recently named one of 75 Black healthcare leaders to know by Becker's Hospital Review and was a TEDx presenter in 2022. She participates in national media interviews and regularly contributes to several publications. She and her husband enjoy life in Reno-Tahoe with their two young girls.

Can We Close The $2.3 Trillion Gap For Black Women?
In this episode of "Inclusion Unscripted" with host Margaret Spence, the economic impact of Black Women is explored. The discussion is fueled by a recent article on Black Women's hair, which sparked a conversation about the economic challenges they face. The episode delves into Economics 101 for women of color, shedding light on how they are held back and the implications this has on society.
The episode highlights a shocking statistic from a Market Watch opinion piece: closing key racial gaps in wages, education, housing, and investment for Black Americans earlier could have added $16 trillion to the U.S. economy. Additionally, racial income inequities cost the U.S. economy approximately $2.3 trillion annually.
"Inclusion Unscripted" is not just a podcast about diversity and inclusion—it's a commitment to living it. The show aims to empower diverse listeners to voice their needs and inspire organizations to create more equitable and inclusive workplaces. E33: The Four Seasons of Your Career: Nothing Stays The Same Forever
Monday Nov 14, 2022
Monday Nov 14, 2022
What Season Best Describes Your Career? It's time to do more than survive! As we move toward the end of the year, it’s time to assess where you are in your career and begin the process of moving toward your renewed goals.
Many of you are still in survival mode. Some of you are in the cul-de-sac of your career. Others are in the whirlwind of undefined expectations. Like the transitions of seasons from fall, to winter, to spring, to summer – your career is going through a metamorphosis. As we transition from one season to the next, our circumstances, needs, mindsets, and actions must evolve.
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence asks, What season best describes your career? Your career teaches specific lessons, but most of us aren’t listening. We celebrate our wins and soft-soap our career losses, but we often never learn to really consider who we are, what we want out of our career, and how we want to move forward from this moment. The seasons of your career ask, how do you want to evolve as a person?

E32: When High-Powered Women Leaders Fail Do All Women Fail?
Tuesday Nov 08, 2022
Tuesday Nov 08, 2022
Introspection: Are women given winnable roles? What happens when women fail on the public stage?
Two days ago, I predicted that the British Prime Minister wouldn’t last until the end of the week. Of course, I’m sad that I was right. But her public demise should make every woman take a moment to think about their own rise and potential fall.
When women rise, are they adequately supported? What causes women to flame out in the first place? What does a woman’s failure say about the fate of other women? Are women the cause of their own failure?
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will look at how women rise, how they fail, and why we must better prepare women to be effective leaders. The critical leadership fact, women are often set up to fail even when it looks like we’re rising. We will unpack the path to failure so women can spot this in their own career journey.

E31: Put The Oxygen Mask On Ourselves: How Do We Support Each Other?
Monday Oct 31, 2022
Monday Oct 31, 2022
The overarching question can I trust my own people to have my back?
Imagine standing next to a 150-story building; you’re looking up, and through the windows, you can see your fellow brother and sisters of color working diligently, and you ask yourself, how can I get to that level? What kind of support do I need from my community to rise? What type of support should I expect from us – my people? If I ask for help, will I get it at a deep level?
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will pull the scab off the dysfunction within, the lack of support throughout, and we will take a deep dive into the specific ways professionals of color must start supporting each other.

E30: The Power of Equity – Distilling Equity Into Talent Strategies
Monday Oct 24, 2022
Monday Oct 24, 2022
When you think about equity, what are your first thoughts? The normal narrative around DEI goes something like this, “Organizations must make diversity not a nice to have but a key advantage in your organizations’ core mission, corporate and social responsibility, and because it’s the right thing to do.” Nowhere in that discussion do we add equity.
In this episode, Margaret Spence will follow up on last week's episode, where she discussed the collective impact of equity. This week we will define equity as fairness and justice achieved through systematically assessing disparities in opportunities, outcomes, and representation and redressing [those] disparities through targeted actions.
How does equity play out when you’re recruiting diverse talent, retaining converging voices, and building sustainable initiatives to tackle executive leadership diversity? To dismantle the walls and silos around diversity, we must build a bigger tent that includes equity.

E29: The Collective Impact of Equity for Professionals of Color
Friday Oct 21, 2022
Friday Oct 21, 2022
It just seems that equity isn’t a high-level discussion in the DEI space. Most DEI practitioners focus on creating diversity, building inclusion, and talking through equality but then stop short of addressing equity within their organizations. Why aren’t we leading off with equity before talking about diversity?
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will discuss what equity means at every level of the organization and why we must address equity as the foundational level of any DEI work. We cannot be afraid to talk about equity. Given that we are days past Black Women’s Equal Pay Day – we must address equity to move the needle for professionals of color.

E28: Who Believes In You?
Thursday Oct 20, 2022
Thursday Oct 20, 2022
Besides your parents, your family, and friends, who believes in you? Who believes in your vision, your purpose, and your possibilities? Who believes that you can be a leader? It’s imperative to determine very quickly if your leaders believe in you. As a person of color, the organization we work for must believe in us. Without ardent supporters, you will never advance beyond the employee desk. Therefore, having someone who believes in you, who is willing to give you directions that are meaningful, and who is objective is a mandatory component of advancing your career.
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will discuss what it means to have trust, faith, and confidence in someone’s potential to propel them forward. The often-missing ingredient for diverse individuals is having leaders who believe in our ability to move ahead. So we will answer the question: Who believes in you and why?

E27: How Will You Rewrite the DEI Story to Build a Different Narrative?
Wednesday Oct 19, 2022
Wednesday Oct 19, 2022
How can DEI survive if the story's narrative assumes that we are less than and need help becoming more than?
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will address how we narrate the DEI story. She feels that our DEI Story cannot be "Poor, pitiful you," and along comes a big organization to rescue us from ourselves. The story doesn't define the people – the DEI data is a person – the process requires not only vision but compelling storytelling – most people don't know how to reframe the story. But we should teach them because it's our story.
Before we can effectively create change that impacts our existence, we must be willing to rewrite our story and demand that others tell our story the right way. The narrative of diversity has a story. But unfortunately, it is built on pity…poor, underserved person needs a helping hand to get ahead.
The targeted question is – how will you rewrite the DEI story to build a different narrative? We are often wedded to our story, which leaves us stuck in the same description, unable to look through a new lens. Join us live on LinkedIn, YouTube, and Facebook on Friday, September 9th, at 2 pm EST, or listen to the replay on your favorite podcast app.
