Inclusion Unscripted
Inclusion Unscripted, where we’re not just talking about diversity and inclusion, we’re living it. The Inclusion Unscripted Live Weekly Podcast is unapologetically honest about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Host Margaret Spence believes that to push beyond diversity by the numbers, we need to start having conversations that no one else is willing to have. This show is a platform for those conversations. Each week, we dismantle the status quo and help organizations understand how to stand up for professionals of color and women in the workplace. We tackle two bold questions: When you are at your best and most inclusive self, who do you want to become? And what should your employees expect from you when you are inclusive? Our goal is to empower diverse listeners to ask for what they want and to inspire organizations to co-create more equitable and inclusive workplaces. Tune in every week for a new episode. E17: Limits to Women’s Success - How Far Up The Ladder Can We Go?
Monday Jul 18, 2022
Monday Jul 18, 2022
Can Women Support Each Other? Can Diverse Women Get Support from Other Women? Why Do Women Limit Each Others Success and Why We Must Do Better Now - #BreakTheBias
Over the years, I've observed that when a woman becomes a CEO and leaves the role, a man and sometimes several men always replace her. In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence asks, why don't women effectively sponsor and support other women for higher roles? What will it take for women to end the bias against each other? Men will immediately cling to each other, figure out how to help each other, and execute a plan to find other men to help them move forward. Women are still in the wait-and-see mode - which is even more problematic for women of color who white women supervise.
For women, we often view other women as threats, our behavior can be detrimental to forming trusting relationships, and we often sabotage each other to climb the ladder. Why do we do this? What about the psyche of women that stops us from fully supporting other women?
This episode will unpack the structure behind the lack of support that women offer each other. Then, we will discuss how we can change this by moving from the scarcity mindset to becoming supportive, empowering, and champions for each other.

E15: Black Professionals You Are Enough!
Monday Jun 20, 2022
Monday Jun 20, 2022
Black Professionals – We Are Enough Today, Tomorrow, and The Day After That Too.
Stop looking to corporate spaces for validation of your greatness.
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will remind Black Professionals that we are enough! Many of you look to your organizations to validate your purpose. You want your boss to tell you that you're on the right track to advancement. You want to know that you're supported and recognized for your skills. Unfortunately, the reality for Black Professionals – our well is empty because the organizations we work for will not validate that we are enough. They will instead prove to us that good is not enough. That will affirm that great will never be enough. When all else fails, they will remind us that being exceptional is a bridge too far.
But we must find our center and realize that we are enough. We don’t need corporate validation to prove that we are enough, because we are enough right now. This powerful episode will reaffirm our need to love ourselves without expecting the organizations we work for to love us back. Inclusion Unscripted, where we’re not just talking about diversity and inclusion, we’re living it.

E14: Executive Level Exclusion - Invited But Not Welcomed
Monday Jun 20, 2022
Monday Jun 20, 2022
When We Are Invited Into Executive Spaces Will We Ever Belong?
Can we ever feel like we belong in spaces that are not diverse and where the welcome mat is not rolled out to its fullest? Diversity can be deliberate, but belonging must be fostered – the challenge, organizations want executive-level diversity, but they will never do the hard work to make sure we belong after we get the invitation to enter.
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will discuss inclusive exclusion in executive spaces. The bold question is, are we really welcomed in executive leadership, or should we stop trying to fit in? This is a tough conversation about how Black Professionals are excluded even when they are in the highest roles in most organizations. The invitation to enter doesn't include an invitation to the party.

E13 - We Are Still Placeholders: Being the Only One
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
Tuesday Jun 07, 2022
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted host, Margaret Spence will discuss the Placeholder Syndrome - when you're the only one on the team representing your entire race or gender or gender identity. By definition, Placeholders are there to prove to you that we are ALL good enough.
If you've beaten the odds and arrived in the executive seat as a minority professional, you clearly know that you're a placeholder. If you are the only Black or Brown woman on the team, you are a placeholder. If you are the only Black man on the team, you are definitely a placeholder. If you are the only member of the LGBTQ community in your company, you are a placeholder. If you represent the Latinx or AAPI community and you are the only one on the team, you are a placeholder. If you are neurodiverse and you're the only one on the team, you're a placeholder. Historically, placeholders have carried the burden of an entire community on their shoulders – let's unburned them starting now. The question is, why do we still have rooms with only one person there to represent the voice of an entire community of people?

Tuesday May 31, 2022
Tuesday May 31, 2022
Diversity Hiring, Do you really want to hire us? Sham Interviews, Token Slate of Candidates, and Psychological Trauma of Repeatedly Interviewing Black Professionals You Have No Intention of Hiring.
For every Black Professional tokenized by your sham interviews and hiring processes – we are serving you with legal action and seeking Class Action Status. In this week's episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will discuss the tokenization of recruiting, retaining, and promoting Black Professionals.
Corporate America is the NFL! Hiring Managers and HR Leaders, how many times have you used the Rooney Rule in your diversity hiring process? Knowing good and well, you had no intention of hiring the diverse candidate because you already had your chosen one who was "the most qualified" candidate.
We have always known that you were using us as a dirty mop in your DEI hiring process – we've been Rooney Ruled for decades – thanks to Brian Flores, we have the receipts. This episode is timely because we now have Wells Fargo joining the sham interview triangle…the dirty secret is out in the open.

It has long been assumed that Black and Brown professionals must remain stoic in the face of microaggressions and other forms of racism. We are told that we must not express our feelings of anger, disgust, frustration, infuriation, and sadness when you violate our wellbeing. Unfortunately, this form of microaggression often goes unchecked. It is a subtle form of racism that disrespects and invalidates our experience.
In this episode of Inclusion Unscripted, Margaret Spence will unpack - the microaggression, microinvalidation, and microassault that occur every day for Black and Brown professionals in the workplace.
Human Resources often contribute to the microaggressive tendencies of managers by failing to address these issues and by pretending that we are wrong from raising the issue of subtle racism. This form of microinvalidation needs to stop. We deserve to be respected, and you must acknowledge our feelings. You cannot continue to create environments that are not psychologically safe for Black and Brown professionals.

E10: The Deliberate Internal Recruiting Gaps For Black Professionals
Sunday May 08, 2022
Sunday May 08, 2022
One of the most significant intentional and deliberate oversight in the HR process is not fortifying the internal recruiting of Black Professionals. Yes, HR, you are intentional, willful, systematic, and procedurally excluding Black Professionals from your internal recruiting strategy. Margaret Spence says in this episode, "You also allow your managers to deliberately hoard Black talent, preventing them from fulfilling their career growth and uplevel trajectory."
The biggest frustration for Black Professionals is the inability to move up within any organization and being told to wait your turn. The narrative of "you're not ready, and we will consider you the next time" – without any real roadmap or bread crumbs to follow. Talented Black Professionals are hoarded by managers instead of empowered to move up and advance into more challenging roles. Organizations aren't doing enough to address the internal recruiting gap for Black Professionals.
We build an excellent on-paper strategy to recruit Black talent from HBCUs or other institutions. But we don't do enough to empower upward mobility with a specific focus on up-leveling Black Professionals without having them jump through one million hoops to prove they are worthy of your advancement options. Sometimes it's much easier for Black Professionals to leave than move up.

E9: When You Are At Your Best and Most Inclusive Self, Who Do You Want to Become?
Thursday May 05, 2022
Thursday May 05, 2022
DEI Stands At a Fork In The Road! What are the pressing issues that cause employees to question your commitment to DEI and inclusion? Margaret Spence asks in this episode, does your prior patterns of behavior cause employees to question your commitment to DEI results?
This episode was recorded live at the beginning of 2022 and focused on making "The Year of DEI Possibilities." So what will we do to live up to what's possible? The last 24 months have taught us that we must do more to fill the gap for underserved employees and communities. This program is a call for renewed action – leave your safe zone. If we are to deliver on inclusion, we must do more than we are doing now – Try Harder!
The fancy vision and mission must be abandoned for real work – yes, real work. Work that shows results. Managers and leaders who commit to DEI must also follow through to create results. So what do we want for 2022 and beyond?

E8: Can We Trust HR to Advocate Fully for DEI?
Wednesday May 04, 2022
Wednesday May 04, 2022
We can't begin to talk about DEI success without mentioning Human Resources. In this episode, Margaret Spence will unpack HR's role in fostering, empowering, and roadblocking diversity initiatives. Can HR leaders show up bolder for people of color in any organization?
Margaret Spence says in this episode, we are not here to create comfort zones for human resources leaders - we are here to help you show up and advocate for DEI beyond the numbers.
The HR role within organizations can befriend the concept of building a more inclusive workplace or move to control and script every aspect of DEI without making any substantive change. The essential tenets of HR are fostering and creating a culture of inclusion that values diversity, equality, equity, and empowerment. The question is, does HR foster the level of inclusion to make a difference? What are you doing as an HR leader to support greater inclusion? What should diverse people and women expect from you? If we cannot count on you then it's time for HR to move out of that way to allow greater progress.

E7: The Chief Diversity Officer Window Dressing
Monday May 02, 2022
Monday May 02, 2022
After twelve months of socially responsible Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) and Diversity Director hiring, why are CDOs walking out the door to start their own consulting company or moving on to new opportunities outside of DEI? If I didn't know better, you'd think CDOs are saying to organizations, take your job and shove it – I will not participate in your written sanitized script designed to pretend to care about advancing diversity and inclusion.
They are saying to companies, why should we keep doing the thankless clean-up DEI jobs if you don't want to make substantive changes in your diversity and inclusion policies?
In this episode, Margaret Spence says, "If you have the money to hire to CDO, you should figure out how to retain them." Then, we will talk about what it takes to become a resilient, strategic, and successful CDO and Why survival isn't enough.
