Inclusion Unscripted
Inclusion Unscripted, where we’re not just talking about diversity and inclusion, we’re living it. The Inclusion Unscripted Live Weekly Podcast is unapologetically honest about diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Host Margaret Spence believes that to push beyond diversity by the numbers, we need to start having conversations that no one else is willing to have. This show is a platform for those conversations. Each week, we dismantle the status quo and help organizations understand how to stand up for professionals of color and women in the workplace. We tackle two bold questions: When you are at your best and most inclusive self, who do you want to become? And what should your employees expect from you when you are inclusive? Our goal is to empower diverse listeners to ask for what they want and to inspire organizations to co-create more equitable and inclusive workplaces. Tune in every week for a new episode. How Will We Know If Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs Are Succeeding? While organizations build DEI programs, very few ask us - the people who are supposed to know if it is successful, what do we define as success? Most organizations don't even attempt to meet the mark of success - they're just running data points and wishing it all works out.
In today's episode, Margaret Spence will talk about DEI success! So what is DEI success to those who haven't been given success as a core mission? Margaret wonders out loud, what are we doing if success isn't the primary goal? For example, if we're driving the DEI train, when will we know that we've arrived at our destination?

E5: Inclusion Isn’t A Policy, Its People
Monday Apr 25, 2022
Monday Apr 25, 2022
What is your definition of inclusion? Why are employers still writing diversity and inclusion policies, instead of evaluating your people? Here's a bold question, what will make your organization more inclusive? The real question is, can inclusion create reverse discrimination? Who will be offended because the room is more inclusive?
In this episode, Margaret Spence will discuss the reverse discrimination case where a jury awarded a white male employee $10M because he claimed he was fired because he is a white male. He claims he was terminated without cause "as part of an intentional campaign to promote diversity in its middle management ranks.” He was fired as senior vice president of marketing and communication days shy of his 5th anniversary with the company. His replacement – two women, one black and one white.
This ruling is a, wow and wow…and it creates a balancing act that can be hard to reconcile. After years of owning the stadium, the bleachers, the concession stand – can white males claim reverse discrimination? A jury thinks so!

Is it time to start looking for a new job? For some, the time is now, diverse professionals are fed up, and most organizations underestimate the level of resentment we have for them. But as Black and Brown professionals entertain new opportunities – there's reason to be cautious and calculating.
Host Margaret Spence says, what diverse professionals are saying with their feet is, "Take your career ladder and shove it where the sun doesn't shine." We may not be saying it out loud, but we are damn sure thinking it, and many are acting upon it by quitting, silently looking for other options, and entertaining offers their employers never saw coming. So what led up to the "I quit," and how do you rebuild trust and respect?
This episode takes a deep dive into the conversations diverse professionals want to have with their organizations. Let's have an honest, open, bold conversation about career ladders, the lack of mobility, newfound options, and the missed opportunities that lead to the great resignation.
If you're a talent leader, you should tune into this session because if you hope to reengage with diverse professionals and meet their expectations before they exit your stage - you'll want to hear what Margaret Spence has to say.
The bold question is, how do you turn the Great Resignation into a DEI strategic plan?
Our goal is to empower diverse listeners to ask for what they want and to inspire organizations to co-create more equitable and inclusive workplaces. Tune in every week for a new episode. E3: Are We Asking for Equity or Equality?
Sunday Apr 17, 2022
Sunday Apr 17, 2022
When you think about Diversity and Inclusion what are we asking for? Is it equity or equality? I wonder if we're asking for the right thing. Are we looking for greater equality, or is it time to size up our equity stake in organizations?
Within every organization, there are two sides of the house the profit center and the cost center. One side involves equity and the other fosters equality, most DEI programs are constructed around the concept of greater equality leaving the equity table to fend for itself.
In this episode with Margaret Spence, founder of The Inclusion Learning Lab and host of The Inclusion Unscripted Podcast, she will reframe the Diversity and Inclusion ask, it's time we start focusing on equity at the beginning of the DEI discussion.
She will answer:
What is the definition of equitable equality?
Are we at the right table?
There is a vast difference between equity and equality when analyzing your career - Let's evaluate both via the lens of inclusion.
If you arrive at the equality table without equity – what should you ask?
What does that mean if you're not at the equity table for your career?
What can we do to reframe equity, so we increase our equality?
I've seen the shift to create greater equality in my lifetime, and I think today, we need to be asking for a big slice of the equity pie. So let's talk about it.

E2: Let’s Talk About Respect For the DEI Process
Sunday Apr 17, 2022
Sunday Apr 17, 2022
Can you implement diversity and inclusion without addressing respect? I chuckle when organizations attempt to build DEI programs without addressing the underlying issues around respect. The silent elephant in the room. As Aretha Franklyn said, RESPECT – All I’m asking is for a little respect.
When managers fail to hire women or minorities – are you fixing a diversity program or a lack of respect for the contributions of women and minorities? Is it only diversity, or is it the lack of respect?
In this episode with Margaret Spence founder of The Inclusion Learning Lab, we will discuss "Respect for the Diversity and Inclusion Process"
When organizations fail to fix the lack of diversity in their ranks – is it inclusion or respect?
When leaders don’t promote career advancement for diverse professionals – is it talent development or respect?
When teams drown out the voice of young people – is it belonging or is it respect?
When recruiters downplay students from HBCUs – is it talent acquisition or respect?
When HR Managers say we hire the best candidate – is it recruiting or respect?
Respect is at the core of every discrimination and exclusion in and out of the workplace. If we fail to address respect, we fail to pave the way toward greater inclusion.

Sunday Feb 06, 2022
Why You’re The Right Person For This Role
What makes you uniquely gifted at this moment, at this time, to raise our voices in this arena? Have you ever asked yourself that question?
Over the last few weeks, I've deeply evaluated what makes us good at advocating for diversity and inclusion – it certainly isn't the work of diversity. It's something more. So the question is, what superpowers do you possess to do the work of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
Your Super Power is what makes you successful as a DEI advocate. It's what allows you to outperform, find resilience, and navigate the game of inclusion. Yes, it's a game – some of us play chess while others play checkers. Although we all have strengths that interplay with our role in DEI, have you ever connected your gifts as an individual to the work that you do on behalf of others and to eliminate inequality within the spaces we occupy? Let's start connecting you to the work you do. Without this connection, we quickly lose hope and become frustrated when things don't go the way they should.
What are the unique abilities that make you the right person to do this job? What is your essential skill and knowledge that others wonder how do you do it? When you ask yourself, why do I keep doing the work of DEI – what comes to mind?
This program will help you understand your role and how your unique gifts have prepared you to be an advocate and ally for greater diversity and inclusion.
